Sunday 19th June - Juventutem Bristol Mass and Social

A reminder that we will meet again on Sunday June 19 for Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman rite, offered by Fr. Goodman at Holy Cross, Bedminster. For directions to the church, please ask or see the map on the blog or Facebook group.

After Mass there will be a social event - precise details to be confirmed when I have a better idea of numbers and deals available locally. Obviously Mass is open to everyone (we do not organise "youth Masses", but rather we attach social events for youths to the Holy Mass); the meal is for 18-35s, apart from clergy of course. Not that we will be checking ID!!

Please tell your friends about this great opportunity to mix with like-minded local Catholics.

Sign up on the Facebook group  or contact me via this blog - or even just turn up on the day! (although it is useful to know if you are coming so I can book a table at a restaurant).

St Norbert, pray for us.

Upcoming Juventutem Bristol events!

Happy feast of the Regina Caeli!

I am sorry for the long gap between events and for the delay in this announcement. You can blame various factors, not least my own inadequacy...

However, I am delighted to say that arrangements are now in place for the next gathering, with provisional arrangements for the next one after that.

To begin with, we will meet again on Sunday June 19th.

Arrangements will be the same as before, i.e. Mass in the Extraordinary Form at Holy Cross, Bedminster (12.30pm), followed by a lunch nearby. More details nearer the time.

(image from the first High Mass in the US of the newly-ordained English FSSP priest, Fr Matthew McCarthy)

The Sunday meet-up may be a monthly thing. However, excitingly, in July we have provisionally arranged for an event on the Second Friday (8th). Again, confirmation and details to follow, but it looks like that this will again be a Mass in the Extraordinary Form followed by a social event. Hopefully again this will become a regular slot (tbc).

But I have received some excellent suggestions from fellow juvenes (and the sacerdos!), and so other possibilities are being considered, including said/sung Vespers + social + Compline, or rosary and benediction (my own favourite!). Further suggestions welcome, via Facebook or the blog.

There are some other exciting things happening in the Clifton diocese in the coming weeks and months, so I will let you know about these. In the meantime, please circulate information about Juventutem with your friends and in your parishes!

God bless.

May 24 - 5th Anniversary of Foederatio Internationalis Juventutem!

"Juventutem" was created on May 24th, 2006 - the feast of Our Lady Help of Christians.

Please pray for Catholic youth throughout the world, and for the international Juventutem movement, of which Juventutem Bristol is a small but important part.

Important event in London this Saturday

This Saturday, May 28th, a newly ordained FSSP priest, Fr. McCarthy (who was ordained only a few days ago in the seminary of Denton, Nebraska), will be celebrating his first Solemn High Mass at St James, Spanish Place in London.

(image from Fr McCarthy's ordination, photo by Dr Joe Shaw, LMS Chairman)
More photos and some videos of the ordinations can be found here.

Obviously for Bristol readers this is a bit of a treck, but it is an important event to show support for. There are so few English priests ordained at all these days, least of all those who celebrate according to the older liturgical books.

It will be a spectacular event, with excellent music; all in quite the most beautiful church in England. For those interested, Fr de Malleray FSSP is also providing a guided tour of the nearby Wallace collection, while there will also be prayers at the Tyburn martyrs' memorial near Marble Arch station. Please get in touch if you would like more details.

If you are unable to make it to London, do please keep Fr McCarthy FSSP, and his confreres in your prayers; and continue to pray for vocations of such men to the priesthood and consecrated life.

(St James, Spanish Place - a wonderful neo-Gothic delight in central London, about 5-10 minutes walk from Bond Street underground station)

Ideas for Juventutem Bristol

There will be another Juventutem Bristol event announced very shortly. The date still needs to be confirmed, but it will be along the same lines as last time, i.e. Mass offered in Holy Cross, Bedminster, followed by a pleasant lunch nearby. Any interested readers get in touch via this blog or join the Facebook group. No obligations!

However, I am still canvassing ideas for future events. It is part of my hope that this can form part of a broader outreach to young Catholic adults in the south-west. There was general approval of having a mid-week event (although inevitably precise days are never easy to arrange); it is hoped that this can include some catechesis or perhaps a Holy Hour.

If any readers have any suggestions for what they'd like to see happen with Juventutem Bristol, please let me know.

Also MOST IMPORTANTLY spread the word! Juventutem Bristol will not thrive unless you, dear members, tell your friends about it, make mention of it in your parishes and so on. If you think you can help, i.e. with putting up posters/leaflets, or in any other way, then PLEASE do let me know.

And remember the youth of Bristol, Bath and the environs in your prayers.

Juventutem London Masses and socials are changing time and location

Images from the first Juventutem Bristol event

Holy Cross, Bedminster - something of a hidden gem, in my opinion...

The rather lovely high altar, with the crucifix that hangs imposingly over the chancel....

The altar of the Sacred Heart, set up for Low Mass. Mass was celebrated by Father Andrew Goodman; there was good attendance.

A somewhat blurry shot of the Mass itself... I think this is at the Kyrie.

The all-important socialising after Mass... here is Father Goodman, with two of the local youth tucking into starters at a nearby Italian restaurant.

Plenty of ideas were shared for future events. Things discussed were having events on a weekday, involving catechesis or perhaps a Holy Hour and/or rosary: if anyone who didn't make it to the first meeting has strong views, please get in touch or leave a suggestion in the combox below.

The next event will be announced shortly. In the meantime, if you can make it Downside Abbey this Saturday (14 May), there will be a High Mass, with Dom Abbot Aidan Bollinger preaching. I will post details of other forthcoming Masses later.

Inaugural Juventutem Bristol event - 2nd Sunday of May!

The first Juventutem Bristol event has now been arranged (many thanks to Fr. Goodman for his help!). Here are the details:

Sunday 8 May 2011
12.30 Low Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman rite
Holy Cross, Bedminster
13.40 Lunch! (probably at Bottelino's, a nearby, inexpensive Italian restaurant - tbc.)

Please sign up on the Facebook page, or indicate in the combox below if you would like to come to this (nothing binding!). You can also email me if you prefer.

Whether you are coming or not, please also tell your friends/family about it - it would be fantastic to have as many people there as possible for the inaugural event!

Anyone aged 18-35 may come. One does not have to have prior experience of the Extraordinary Form, or even to be a Catholic, although to receive Holy Communion you must of course be a baptised Catholic in a state of grace (as per usual). The church can be found on google maps in the post with Bristol Mass times, below.

Wednesday 6 April 2011

Possible venue for first social!

I like the look of Bolletino's, which is very near Holy Cross Church, Bedminster (a likely but not yet confirmed venue for Holy Mass). There is a special offer for Sunday dining, so it is probable that we will aim for Sunday Mass followed by lunch.

Confirmation of dates and arrangements to follow. Further suggestions very welcome! Early May is the target at this stage. Please inform your friends and suggest that they join the Facebook group (no commitment needed, obviously).

Bolletino's website.

This is readily accessible by public transport (and walkable from Bristol Temple Meads station).

The aim of the future events is very much for like-minded Catholics to enjoy each other's company, and assist in the mutual sanctification of the Church's youth. Therefore, all events will have a blend of solemn worship and chilled out socialising. Spread the word!!

Welcome to Juventutem Bristol!

Juventutem Bristol is a group aimed at fostering faith and community among young Catholics (18-35) who live in and around Bristol. Events are of course not limited just to Bristolians, all are welcome!

The first event will be announced shortly, but it is likely to be shortly after Easter - watch this space! The plan is to have a Mass followed by dinner in an inexpensive nearby restaurant. The probable venue for Mass will be Holy Cross, Bedminster, which is the only parish in Bristol (apart from the SSPX) to offer regular traditional Masses on a Sunday. But other Clifton parishes are fairly accessible too, depending on where the majority of people come from!

In the meantime, please join the Facebook group.
